I am trying to replace/repair my bathtub faucet and have ran into a slight problem. the faucet is a single handle 30 year old delta. I have removed the handle and taken out the inner plastic retainer ring from around the stem but cannot remove the outer chrome ring that I assume holds the guts together. I have tried with a pair of channel locks and a pipe wrench using minimal pressure but have only succeeded in rounding off some of the little ridges. Do you have any suggestions how to remove it without damaging the pipes or valve behind the assembly?
tap on the outer ring with a hammer or something similar all the way around, the best tools is a strap wrench but typically if you tap it a bit to break up the lime it will come off by hand. I've also given them a shot of wd-40 and let them sit and they come off. Dont twist the whole body or you'll break off the copper tubing on the back of the valve body.
