Replace / add flange on lead lip at bend
I purchased a house built in 1953 and the upstairs toilet was leaking from the bottom of the bowl. I removed the toiled and discovered a 4" drain pipe with a lead "lip" end bent down around it. The pipe goes down at most 2" before it makes the angle. I'm curious how I should approach a repair / install of a new flange.
I'm not sure if there's a flange underneath the tile where those two bolts go down - should I chip out some tile to get a better look? I did bend up part of the lead thinking this might have been some sort of insert... probably shouldn't have done that?
I'm not quite sure what the pipe material is (I'm not actually sure the lip is made of lead, but it's soft to bend...). It is kind of clay-like when tapping with a screw driver but that might be the grime from over the years...
From what I read this might require getting access to inside the floor and cutting off the end of the pipe to replace with PVC bend.
Any direction on how to proceed would be appreciated! Thanks
If ,all you want to do is remount the toilet---use a repair flange right over the top of the lead collar----seal well with wax before adding a standard wax ring --and you will be back in business ---
Lead toilet bends were seldom used in buildings of that vintage----rather odd---https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...wxEnwN8tFzeEdS
A Lead closet Bend. Rare. Mike is right, but make sure you use a wax seal with a horn. I would bed the repair flange in clear silicone after cleaning the tile with alcohol, but thats me. Make sure you fasten down that flange with large SS flat head screws into solid wood, and make sure the flange on that lead is not folded.
That lead toilet bend is sixty years old and long, long past its expected service life. That white stuff you see in there is lead corrosion getting ready to pop thru to the outside and
start leaking. It needs to be replaced, like yesterday.
