repairing pipe on electric H/W heater

I need to change out the pie on the hot water side of my heater, I have never just changed out a pipe. Do I need to shut off the power and drain some of the water?

how do I go about doing this? Do i need to shut off the cold water too?

shut the power and the cold water feed.drain off from the bottom petcock running a hose off it...open up all the hot water faucets above the heater in the house..this will vent the hot water line down into the top of the heater.lift the relief when the water is not coming out there your good to work the hot water pipe on top soldering and or threaded..
