Removing Tub stopper??

I've got a tub stopper (mid-sixties Kohler style), and I need to get the lever actuator out of the tub. It seems that if I remove the flange I might be able to finagle it out but i am not sure. Any ideas

Post A picture

Fix it right the first time, so you won't have to fix it a 2nd time.
