Removing a soldered U joint

How do you do this on a 1 1/2" brass pipe? When I heat up one side, the other side cools and won't budge. Is the only way to cut it off? I believe there is an indicator button which fell in and is blocking the flow. It fit quite snugly in the pipe and when I tried to remove it, I only succeeded in pushing it further in the pipe.

A p trap is the correct nomenclature, though it looks more like a U to me!

Removing a soldered U joint

Ayuh,... You can't solder, or unsolder a joint, til it's Dry both inside,+ out...
If there's standing water in it, you Can't unsolder it....

Removing a soldered U joint

My original problem was that an indicator button had fallen into the drain and I thought it was in the p trap. The plumber came by and just pushed a snake through for $190.00. He said it is very rare to find items in the p trap, like rings or other valuables. He also said that it was very hard to get a p joint dry enough to unsolder. He said I would have been there for an hour boiling it off. Live and learn!
