removing old bathtub

My current bathtub has a crack right down the center. It is a fiberglass tub with the wall surround all in one. There seems to be a lip around the edge of the entire thing. My question is, can I remove it without having to tear out the entire walls surrounding it?

You might be able to cut it out, piece by piece, but putting a new one back in is going to be the real problem. You're not going to be able just slip it underneath the wall.

If you attach a photo, you'll get many more replies.

Good Luck

Is the surround glued onto the wall or nailed directly to the frame? Sometimes the direct to frame models have slots that match the tub. Is seems like it would be difficult to work around either way. Since your tub is already trashed, like KNighton said you can cut or break it away. You will have better idea of what's going on with the surround and how to proceed once you do this anyway. A new fiberglass tub will need to have the bottom supported. Some recommend thin-set mortar, some sand and lately, dense foam insulation. You will want to follow the manufacturers recommendation in order not to void the warranty. Most of those tub bottoms fail because they are not properly supported.
