Remove saddle valve for ice maker line?

So I am moving and was disconnecting my ice maker line. It it a saddle valve that self pierced the line. I applied it to the water line before the shut off valve. I assumed if you tightened the valve stem it would seal off the line. It does not. Now it is leaking 1/2 gallon/day. Any suggestions on what to do? Please and thank you!

Most saddle valves will leak eventually, that's where they are prohibited by the state plumbing code here in Illinois.

First question: when you say you "tightened the valve stem", are you referring to (1) the "handle" (usually a "T" shape on these valves) or (2) the packing nut, which surrounds the valve stem and screws down onto the body of the valve. If you have not yet tried tightening the packing nut, tightening it 1/8 to 1/4 turn, and see if that stops leak.
