Removal of Tub Spout

My tub spout has been leaking when the shower was on, so after some research, I found that it is probably the diverter and the spout needs to be replaced. I was able to remove the spout, but there was not a nipple behind the wall for the new spout to screw onto. Instead, there was a threaded protrusion from the old spout that screwed into the wall. I have researched and have not been able to determine what type of connection this is. Now I am a complete novice at plumbing. Does anyone know what I would need to replace the spout?

Thanks

The 1/2' threaded nipple came out with the spout----you do have a threaded flange inside the wall----take the old spout the the store with you----find a 1/2" nipple that will extend out the back of the new spout just as far as the old one does----(allowing for tightening up the parts)---and you should be okay.
