Refrigerator water line under doorway.
I would like connect a water line to a new refrigerator. It is in the 2nd floor of a 4-plex so I can't run the line into a crawl space. The line will have to cross a entry way so I can't hide it behind a cabinet or wall trim. Any suggestions? Would I want to cut a thin strip in the subfloor under the transition strip between the carpet and vinyl?

can't you go to the kitchen sink connections and catch it there

Yes, my plan is to catch it from the kitchen sink. But, to go from the sink to the fridge I have to go across a entry way. In the lower units, I drill a hole in the floor and run it through the crawl space. In this unit since I am on the 2nd floor I don't have access through the floor. I will run it behind the cabinets and behind molding, except the 32" doorway.

  • Run in the wall above the doorway
  • Put a 1" high threshold between the rooms, notch out the bottom and run the tube under the threshold. Maybe go as low as 3/4".

If you must put the pipe just under the floor (less than about 1-1/4 inch from the surface), put down a continuous row of nailing plates (nail protection plates, they're something like 1-1/2 inches wide and 3 to 4 inches long) commonly used with electrical wiring so as to cover the pipe's path. Your thicker threshold or other floor trim would go on top of this. Some more elaborate carving will be needed.
