re-circulating pump noise

Replaced re-circulating pump in return line of a domestic hot water heater system. Pump is running hot to touch and is making excessive amount of noise. Is it likely I didn't remove all the air from the enclosed system, or could there be other reasons for the noise? Thanks for any suggestion to correct this problem.
