Re-assembling tub faucet: mysterious O-Ring

Hello-
I am putting my tub faucet back together after tiling and there's an o-ring that I can't remember where it came from. I believe it was in the location I have it now but I don't know what it would be for. See the photo, it's the o-ring that I currently have past the bonnet ring.
Anyone know? Thanks!

While I'm at it, what kind of caulk should I use for this plate? Do I only caulk in the small hole, or around the outer edge as well?

that oring belongs right there. put it just behine that nut the slip the trim on.. as for caulk you can use kitchen and bath caulk and just caulk arounf the outside of the trim plate.

By looking at the photo, it appears the o-ring does no good resting on the valve body. Without being physically present or having manufacturer specs it's tough to speculate where the o-ring goes!

What's the name of the shower valve manufacturer?

As far as caulking we usually use a grout caulking that matches the existing grout color around the finish trim.

I think the o-ring is correct but i have another question for you. It might just be the picture but did you leave enough room for the screws that mount the plate.

Yes, there is enough room for the screws

It's a Delta 1400 Series.
