Question of replacing a tub with a shower unit

I was wondering as I look at most or if not all shower units the drain is in the middle of the unit. However the Tub I am replacing has the drain somewhere between 6-10 inc from the wall. This appears not to be enough room for a center drain shower. Will I have to move the drain or is there another way to put in a shower unit?

Thanks

You will have to move the drain

Depending on the type of shower pan you are looking for. There are some "retrofit" pans, made for just this sort of thing.

If it is a typical tub/shower installation, it is probably a 1-1/2" drain. Shower units require a 2" drain, so you'll have to change it anyway. When you do, put it where you want it.

True about the drain size, but easier to adapt to a 2" drain in existing location rather than moving it.
I've used those retrofit pans in situations where it saved a lot of framing work due to joist/girder locations for example.
The retrofit pans are also available in cultured marble products as well, but cost a bit more than the veriteks and other brands.
