I live in California and I believe we use ABS for waste lines, and PVC for clean water. I've noticed on some DIY shows that they use only PVC. It would be easier if we only used one or the other because they require different solvents and glues. Why doesn't California use PVC like it appears everyone else does?
I don't really think that there is much difference in using white plastic PVC vs black plastic ABS in California vs any other state, as far as I know. There is a particular type of solvent/glue just for connected PVC to ABS.
However, some places, such as the New York City area for one, require cast iron drain pipes only.
I prefer glued plastic drain pipes vs any type of sectional pipes because "glued" fittings prevent root intrusion (as long as the line isn't broken) and sectional pipe won't. Roots will get into sectional joints, not if but when.
I have a combination PVC and ABS DWV system, and I've never had any problems. Mike
