PVC Pipes Pop And Click When Water Runs

Hello,

I just bought a new home 1 year ago in South Carolina. I have PVC pipes for plumbing under the house (walk in space). I also use a 40 Gallon Electric Water heater.

When we use water anywhere in the house the pipes "Pop" and "Click" as it runs. The noise gets faster until it keeps an even beat after the water is on for about 15 seconds. When you shut the water off the noise gradually stops after about 15 seconds. This happens with both the hot and cold water running. This does not happen when the water drains.

My wife gets up way before the rest of us each morning to shower, etc. and the noise almost always wakes everyone in the entire house.

ANY suggestions / remedies would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for such a great board.

Sounds like the pipe is moving slightly (expansion/contraction or just vibration) and making noise where it rubs against something. Try to track down where the noise is coming from (pipe supports, where the pipe passes through joists or studs or anything). You might be able to tighten up clamps, enhance clearance or even caulk a tight area to eliminate rubbing.

If that doesn't work turn off the wife's alarm clock when you go to bed so she doesn't get up so early.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to locate a suspect area and report back soon. Yes, she does make the coffee but for some reason that never wakes me up.
