PVC fittings

A dresser coupling refers to a class of fittings that typically include a rubber boot on each end, and a steel band clamp to cinch up the boot. A compression fitting is completely different, typically you see them in water stops. Compression fittings include a ring (typically metal) that gets compressed around the pipe, and the ring fits into a beveled seat, forming a liquid tight seal.
