Arrow Problems replacing old shower fixture

Hi,
I am replacing the shower head on my bathroom and when I unscrewed the head, I found a round headed fixture that seems impossible to unscrew. Can anyone give me some advice on whether I should just replaced the pipe or is there a secret to unscrewing this ancient fixture.

Thanks for any consideration.

I'm not too familiar with plumbing but im almost positive that a picture would help ten fold.
