Pressure vacuum breaker noise

I have a general question. I have a pressure vacuum breaker in the back yard that feeds the auto pool filler. I'm not sure the make/model, but it looks something like this. Also, there is a hose bib I use off of the main line before the breaker.

I've noticed that when it engages, there's a loud noise coming from the vacuum breaker, and it kinda vibrates slightly. It will stop if I cut either line (or reduce the flow a lot) in or out of the breaker. What could cause this? I'm wondering if the whole thing needs to be replaced or if there are some simple things I can check first. One thing I found is the black plastic plate on top is cracked where it's screwed on, but that shouldn't cause this type of noise/shaking. I can't see any leaks coming out of it. Thoughts?

If it would help, I can post pictures of the set up when I get home.

Update:

If it helps, here are some pictures -

Do you even need something like that? I'd get rid of it.

Yes, in AZ at least it's required by law. It prevents contaminated water (such as chlorinated pool water) from going into the main city water line. I guess I'll take it off and take it to the local plumbing store and see what they think.

I would think a simple check valve would be more than sufficient
