Pop-up drain - ball rod for bottom of drain too short to reach strap. Options?

Just installed a Kohler faucet and the ball rod that comes out of the drain and connects to the strap on the faucet rod is too short. I tried bending the strap in an 'L' shape and that is just not working. It's giving too much play and won't allow the drain to open and close correctly. What are my options here?

Call or go online and see if kohler has a longer one or extension. I'm sure they could help you out. Very reputable company.

Or, take what you have and go to a local plumbing supply store (most people working there are pros or retired pros). I'm sure someone there will come up with something to make it work. Like a rod extension coupling and a piece of rod or something.

Got a picture?
Tried pulling the rod out and turning the stopper 180 degs.?
If it's backwards it" not going to work.
