pool pump fill then dumps water

My pool pump fills with water and the air (mostly) clears in the lines. Right before all air is out the pump sort of flushes all of the water out of the pump. Simultaneously the skimmer basket starts sucking water due to an extreme drop in the water level of the skimmer. FYI, the pool water level is good and the pump lid is tightly screwed on. Before I call the pool guy$ can anyone at least give me an idea as to what is going on? Thanks a bunch!!

It really sounds like you have a leak on the suction side of your pump somewhere or maybe the gasket on your pump lid is messed up or missing. Or maybe a crack in the housing.

Thanks for your comment. I'll check the gasket around the sand filter as all other areas check out.
