pool pump

Does anyone know if I am correct about installing a pump. Doesn't the pump have to be below the skimmer so it will not loose its prime when you clean the pump inlet basket. Also do they make a self priming pool pump?

Real pool pumps, as oppossed to the little things that come with botom end above ground pools, are self priming and do not need to be below the skimmer. You would need to mount the pump in a dry well , or down hill of the pool to get it that low, obviously not very practical.

A friend of mine has a 1 1/2 hp Hayward pump that is not self priming. If he has it on the bottom drain and gets air in the system it will not work. What do you consider a real pool pump?

I suggest that you go to TroubleFreePool.com and see what they have to say. You will need to post whether or not you have an above ground or an inground at the very least, and probably your pump type and filter type.

I'm not really a pool guy but I am on my second pool (one of which I built), and both of my pumps have been above the water level and worked fine. There may be some that won't but you also need to make sure that if the skimmers are dry the suction lines from them are closed off if you are just circulation through the main drain at the bottom of the pool.
