Pool heater underground gas line

I want to install a pool heater. My pool is 8000 gal, my gas meter is 60 feet from my pool equipment. What size pool heater do I need and what size underground gas line do I need to run?

What size pool heater do I need?
What is the incoming fresh water temp?
How warm do you want to make it?
What are the daytime ambient air temps
Do you have a night cover to keep it warm?

According to poolcenter... 100,000 Btu should suffice

Pool heater underground gas line

There is no hard and fast rule for your questions.

While a 100,000 BTU may suffice, if it runs forever to maintain the temperature you want, it can be an energy hog. Oversizing the heater too high will reduce efficiency because of very short run times and starts and stops. Any reputable pool company will be able to tell you what you need.

As far as the gas pipe size, that will depend greatly on several factors. You should never size gas pipe for intermittent load. You size pipe for maximum load meaning the potential for all of your appliances running at once.

If this is natural gas you should also find out if your current meter can handle the added load or if they need to increase it. If it is propane, then you can run a two stage regulated system meaning that you can have a high pressure regulator on the tank feeding 10 PSI and run a small line to a pressure regulator (11" WC) at the pool heater itself and then tie into the pool heater with black iron.

Two words of caution, number one... most places have a "One Call" system which you can call and the different utilities in the area (water, electric, gas etc) can come out and mark where their lines are BEFORE YOU GO DIGGING FOR YOUR UNDERGROUND LINE. The second word of caution is: I would NOT recommend that you do this work yourself unless you are ready to accept the risks of an improper installation. I do not make this suggestion to discourage you from doing the work yourself; I am merely saying that underground lines are not something that a homeowner should try to do themselves because too much can go wrong if not done correctly. So please, have a pro look at this and do the work. You can dig the trench for the line yourself if you want which will save you labor but I don't think doing the piping yourself is wise.
