Pool backwash outflow

Greetings--

Our new house has the pool's backwash/drain tied into the house's sanitary sewer. That's new to us. Our current house has the drain simply going out to the street.

What's the logic here ? Why drain it into the sanitary sewer ?

So your pool is draining to the sanitary sewer? That's completely illegal here, I don't know about there. Maybe your pool pre-dates the code that said you couldn't do it? Sort of like my gutters (installed in the 30s) still drain into my sanitary sewer although it's against code now.

Could be somebody tied it in after the inspection such as a previous owner etc.. Dont sound right cause if your sewer line backs up it could contaminate the pool water.

I think I would change it to where it just runs to the street.

Since the drain for the pool isn't constantly open (it has a valve) nothing can back up into it unless the valve is open. You need to check the local codes on it. Most likely it's illegal. You don't need to rush out and change it tomorrow though.
