Plumbing Question

I heard some dripping in my basement and went to scope it out. The waste water pipe that goes through my basement floor into the sewer has a leak in it. I think water is escaping between the pipe and the access plate. Should I just try to tighten it down or open the thing up? There's a fair amount of rust so I don't want to make the problem worse.

The water goes between a drip and a steady stream when I use more water.

Any help would be appreciated.

All good things (eventually) come to an end...
and that includes cast iron sewer pipes.

The leak may be a fitting or it may be that the pipe itself has a crack or worse.
Take some digital pics and post them here.

You may need to only do a small portion to fix the problem...
but often it's far simpler and even less expensive to do more.
The pictures will help to determine where that line is.
