Hard to say without actually seeing it first hand, but I'll do what I can.

If the "hum" is the pump running but not pumping water, then it could be:
-a worn out impeller [replacable, but no snap job]
- no water for it to pull [water level dropped, or simply lost it's prime]
- air getting into intake pipe [broken, loose, cracked, or damaged pipe]

If the "hum" is the motor trying to turn but seized up, then it's probably the bearings. In which case, well...

On a ten year old pump, my advice is to go buy a new one and replace the whole thing while you've got it all apart. run you two or three hundred bucks I'd guess.

Good luck.

Does this type of motor have a capacitor? If so, shouldn't it ( they if two) be checked? Just throwing something out there, not sure if this type motor needs the extra boost.
