plumbing j traps under the sink

i am wondering if anyone knows if plumbing under faucets have to have j traps. my newer built house does not and i wonder if this is why i sometimes smell sewage? aren't traps supposed to suppress that sort of stuff? did my builder do something wrong?

thanks in advance!

If you have fixtures without one of these on them you have to repair as sone as possible; that's an extreme health hazard
