Plumbing fixtures

How can I tell if I'm buying a good quality fixture (like a faucet set) or a cheap "plastic" one that may last a year or two?

First pick it up, the weight ought to tell you if it is plastic or brass. Stay away from big box store house brands. I try to stick with Delta's and Moen's.

delta and moen are good choices always make sure it has the brass pop up assy...thats the better choice over plastic...

also be careful buying delta and moen at box stores they make to grades for them if it is only sold exclusive for the box store that is a good red flag indicator. do not know much about moen any more but if you are looking at delta and it says it has a multi choice valve that is the better delta valve body for a tub shower valve

Ive had no problems with the moen faucets ive bought at menards with plastic pop ups,and ive bought lots of them.
only time I use the metal/brass pop ups is on commercial jobs where theyre required around here :)
Definately stay away from the cheap off brands :)
