Planning my lawn sprinkler system


Once I get the pipe run outside, I will be testing the pressure with a gauge on a boiler drain outside as well as the GPM.

Wouldn't testing it now be inaccurate, since all I have in my house is 1/2" pipe? I know the pressure is between 70 and 80...but won't the flow rate be way higher on my 1" pipe?

No it won't. You could have a 1/4" pipe with 300 lbs pressure and no volume. Increasing the pipe size does not increase volume.

Sorry NHMaster, but you are mistaken, larger pipe sizes will flow higher volumes as a function of the reduced pressure loss. The flow through a 1/2" pipe and a 1" pipe will be significantly different at an 80 psi supply pressure. A 1/2" pipe will flow 5 gpm while a 1" pipe will flow 27 gpm at the same 70 psi residual pressure. Larger pipe sizes = higher volumes of water traveling through the pipe with no restrictions.

So I ran my piping outside. Is there a way to calculate the GPM? I know I have ~83PSI on the 1" pipe at the boiler drain outside, and the pipe is 1".

I know this won't give me the GPM 50' further down the pipe...but isn't there a way to figure out the GPM at that spot in the pipe? I guess I could put a 5-gallon bucket under the pipe to try and time it, but it's tough to get a good measurement since the water comes out so hard.

But his incoming pipe size is not changing.

But I will no longer be reducing to 1/2"...that should give me increased flow from my spigot outside (fed by 1/2") but not more flow than my incoming 3/4" line. Right?

Not gonna lie...I love the pressure in my house. Should I really get a regulator to drop it 3 PSI?

I've measured 80psi +/- at my house (1950's) too
Same at the last house (1905)

I know this is an old topic but you need to read up at irrigationtutorials.com

That site is an absolute wealth of knowledge. I've read through it probably 4 or 5 times. I got an irrigation design book from the library and I already knew everything in it because of irrigationtutorials.com It def won't make you a pro but if you're a hardcore DIYer the site is a must read.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I did a test, and at the point just after my backflow preventer, I have 83PSI and 26 gallons per minute.

I just need to map out where I want my heads and start digging...

I assume the 83psi is static psi? The installer I used to work for was happy to see anything over 60psi. What size meter do you have (if any)? They say you shouldn't pull anymore than 15GPM through a 5/8" meter and to design the zones for 10GPM. I have a 5/8" Badger meter and it is rated for 15GPM continuous and a peak of 20GPM. My water supply from the street is 1" copper and about 40ft long. But I only have 51psi to play with.

If you have a larger meter than me and the pipe to support it you could do quite a bit of watering. You should be able to find the documentation on your meter if it has the name/model stamped on it.
