why won't the pilot lite stay lit on my Bradford White hot water heater. Stays on as long as the pilot button is depressed but goes out when you release button after about a minute or so. Tries several times. Have been having a problem for a little white with the pilot lite going out but has always re-lit and worked for days.
There is a thing called a 'thermo coupling' --that has failed---
To find it look at the flame---there should be a tube or rod right above that (In the actual flame of the pilot)
It has a thin copper tube that goes to the control box on the heater---
If you have an old fashioned water heater---(open hole into the fire chamber) you can go to any hardware store and get a universal thermo couple and change that yourself in a few minutes--
If you have a modern heater with a sealed fire box and a little tiny window--You are in trouble and will be best off calling a plumber---easy enough to fix --but the manufactures will not sell you parts
