Piece on bottom of toilet tank won't seal

I just installed a new Fluidmaster Fill Valve. It's working just fine, except that the white nut that you hand-tighten at the bottom of the tank won't seal. I've untightened and retightened at varying degrees of tightness and I can't get it to fit just right to where it won't drip.

Should I just keep trying or is there a simple solution?

If you are talking about the Fluidmaster 400A make sure the black washer on the bottom has the bevel side down to the inside of tank. Sometimes I will apply a little pipe joint compound to the washer. Also, I always tighten them with my pliers beyond hand tightening you need that washer to compress. Don't kill it, but a little at a time until it stops. Good luck
