Default Phosphate Crystals for water treatment?

I moved to a home using well water. My water goes through a
string filter and then through a canister containing phosphate
crystals.

The previous owner said when he changes the string filter every 3
months, he refills the second cannister with phosphate crystals. He
said the phosphate was to reduce corrosion in the copper pipes and prevent staining.

The phosphate crystals are in a container from Kenmore, but I don't think they still sell them. When I search for Phosphate Crystals, I see there are some filters sold that include the crystals, but I do not see a supplier of loose crystals.

Does anyone know a source for the phosphate crystals and the pros and cons of using them?
