Which Part to Replace? on my Hot Water Heater?

Help? My hot water heater is on the fritz! I get no hot water; I go and hit the reset button and get hot water for about 1.5 showers, then back to no hot water? Every time I reset it, it works, but does the same thing? It is not the fuse in the house? Not sure if this would be the thermostat? If so top or bottom? Or what? Can anyone help me with this PLEASE!!! thank you. -sam

Replace the top and bottom stats.

Which Part to Replace? on my Hot Water Heater?

Ron -Thank you so much! That is what I thought it was. I am fairly handy and can fix most things, I have some books and replacing the thermostats looked simple enough, is there anything specific I should remember/ do/ be careful of/ anything... that you could offer?
Also, I am/was pretty sure that the bottom one was the (bad one) so can I just replace that one or is it better to replace them both?
The heater is in a crawlspace and with all the rain we have had here, there was a bit of standing water overnight (sump pump gave out and had to be replaced) ..... just to make sure, the problems I have wouldn't be related to anything with the drain valve right?
Thank you so much for all the help! I would love to take warm showers again! -sam

Yes replace them both, upper and lower, just make sure you get the wires back on the same terminals you take them off at, and before working on it, shut power off.

Sam,
Take a look at the tstats layout and number of screws before you go to the store, and get new tstats just like them (does not have to be same brand). Exchange the wires one at a time from the old to the new. Can't go wrong. Easy.
Good Luck!

I hope you are not a claustrophibic snakeophobe. Okay I know the term snakeophobe doesn't exist. Good luck. I have worked in tight little crawl spaces. Didn't like it much, but at least I didn't have snakes.
