Outside spigot leaks into crawlspace only with hose attached
After turning on our garden hose for the first time of the season, my husband went in the house while I was outside and heard water spraying. He went into basement and peeked into the crawlspace over the wall, and saw water "spraying". When we turned off the spigot/hose, it stopped.
We have since discovered that it only sprays like this if the hose is attached outside. If nothing is attached to the spigot, it does not leak/spray - regardless of being turned on or off.
This doesn't make any logical sense to us. Any ideas?
(ETA: No we did not turn off the water to this for the winter. So it likely froze and that may have caused an issue.)
I am guessing..........it is a freeze proof spigot, the kind that has the actual washer seat/cutoff 9-12" inside the house. It froze/cracked enough that it only leaks with pressure on it. With the faucet open, with no hose, not enough pressure to force the crack open.
