We just purchased a 3 year old house. In the front of the house there is what I think is the outside cleanout (about 4 inch white plastic pipe) which has a drain cover on it. I am wondering why there is a drain cover on it and not a regular cleanout cap. I know it is not draining anything as it is only 1 foot from the front of the house and has cobwebs in it. Should I cap this drain cover with a normal cleanout cap or could the drain cover be assisting in some sort of venting?
Never seen a clean-out with a drain cover on it. If it is connected to the drain line going to the City sewer main, it should be sealed to prevent sewer gas from coming out. It should have nothing to do with venting. Makes me wonder if the previous owner was using it to dump chemicals.
If you have never made a mistake, you haven't done much.
