Outdoor faucet - spins but wont turn on/off water

I have an outdoor faucet that will spin but doenst turn the water on or off. I dont think the problem is in the handle - the splines dont appear stripped. I've taken the handle off and the stem will pull in and out about a half inch. Can I remove the stem to see what the problem is? Do I have to replace the whole thing? There is what appears to be solder joint about a foot inside the interior wall and it looks like a pain to take apart. Thanks for any suggestions.

My guess is that anyone that can help you, will need to know what type of fixture this is. How about a picture or a name or something like that?
