outdoor faucet handle won't turn off .

I have painters at my house and I went to get some water form the outside faucet to get the white paint off my blue car and the faucet came on and wouldn't' shut off. The handle just keeps turning so I had to shut it off in the basment. Is that ok to do? It is just the outside faucet that is shut off. How do I fix this?

Is this a frost free by any chance? If so, try pushing in on the handle as you turn it. You should be able to feel it when it catches as you turn it.
