one handle moen bathtub faucett, leaks behind wall

just a quick question, i have a one handled moen bathtub faucett, and just when the shower is engaged, water starts leaking behind the wall where the main water control is, not at the spout. something to do with the faucett or pipes? i took the handle off and had a look behind but the whole area is wet and cant tell exactly where it would be comming from. any suggestions as i cant turn the water on when the handle is off.

Desperate---I need just a bit more information.

Is this a new installation?
Have you added a new shower head lately?

Without any information I will made a couple of suggestions----

Put the handle on and get a flash light--See if the water is coming from the top near the shower head.
If it is --unscrew the chrome shower head pipe--replace it or reinstall it if it is still good.
use pipe dope(tfe paste and teflon tape.) It is easy to knock off the tape while slipping the tube through the tile, use dope and tape--

If that doesn't solve the problem then you have a bad fitting above the mixer valve.
You will have to open the wall(hope you have access to the back of this)

Good luck.--Mike--

thanks Mike, no its not a new instal or new shower head, it was done about 4 years ago. I took the pipe out for the shower head yesterday before i posted and put new tape on it, then tried it and it still was leaking. I will now try the other way you suggested
