old man trying to figure out why

I have a walk in shower in a bathroom that is seldom used. I tried to get hot water the other day and i cannot get the hot water to come on. I turn the knob either direction it is still cold. does anyone have a clue why i cannot get the hot water to dispense?

So water does come out, it just isn't hot? Assuming you're getting hot water in other areas of the home? It sounds like this is a single handle valve that controls hot and cold. My assumption would be that the guts of the valve are bad (or corroded/stopped up) and need to be replaced. Turn off the water supply, remove the handle, pull the valve cartridge/stem and take it to the plumbing supply store. Take note of its orientation before removing it so you'll get the new one in correctly.

I, kind sir, wanted to thank you for supplying my house with all of our hot water needs...it is truly appreciated! Sorry I didn't tell you that I diverted it from yours, to mine. Sorry....

Seriously though...what KCtermite said is the first plan of attack...

Um, don't want to overlook the obvious but since it's not used often...MAYBE it's physical location is far from the water heater and you just haven't left it run long enough to actually get hot water to the valve? The water sitting in an unused hot water pipe cools down and then you'd have to run the faucet long enough to get a new supply of hot water through the pipe.
I'm just saying....could be that simple.

Iden, following up on Angus; There should be access to that diverter valve from the other side of the wall. NOW I said SHOULD, it doesnt get done often till disaster strikes, that said let presume you do, thrun the shower on to full hot let it run go to access hole and see if the pipe is hot. It will be on you right side since u r on the opposite side of the shower:}. If pipe is hot than your problem is in the diverter and could be dirt, mineral deposits etc. The brand is important, find it, turn water OFF, open diverter and change the inside and you should be good to go.
