We live off-grid in a yurt in upstate NY. We have solar power. We would like to bring plumbing into our yurt for a hot shower and sink. We do not have a well but do have a huge pond on the property. We also have a frost free hydrant installed in the ground right next to the yurt, but has never been hooked up. We are trying to figure out :
1. Water from pond to yurt without freezing. SurFlow solar pump was recommended for moving the water. Would an in-line heating system do the trick from pond into pipe? Then we would bury pipe below frost line from closest point at pond to yurt area? Is there an in-line heating mechanism we can run with solar electric?
2. Should we bring water directly through hydrant "on-demand" with pump or pump water from pond into a cistern holding tank? Tank could have a heater so it doesn't freeze or should we bury it below frost line?
If we keep it on demand - seems like we have freezing potential at the intake site in the pond perhaps...?
We would use heat tape and insulation from frost free line into yurt. We have one insulated wall inside the yurt, that we would bring the piping into to connect to shower and sink (which share the wall).
3. Heating the water. Recommendations for solar water heater good in winter?
