Odor when flushing

Fowl odor from toilet water, may be septic?
This only happens in one of the upstairs bathrooms.

When I flush this toilet I sometimes smell a nasty odor.
The downstairs toilet and the otherupstairs toilet don't do this.

I am on a septic system.

Should I be worried, or what?

grab both sides of toilet bowl andtry wiggling it.
if snugging the bowl mounting bolts doesnt help try a new wax ring under toilet

We use Clorox chlorine bleach tablets made for toilets in both of our toilet tanks. When either toilet is flushed, I can smell the fresh chlorine from the tank. After a while, the smell goes away.

Using that as an analogy, it sounds like your odor is in the water in the tank. If you remove the cover from the tank, can you smell the odor in the tank just before flushing?

If so, maybe try a Clorox chlorine bleach tablet in the tank. It might kill any bacteria that is living in the tank. Cheap enough to try and it helps to keep the toilet bowl clean. If it's not the problem, at least you'll have a clean looking bowl for a while.

Odor when flushing

Just wanted to post up an outcome

Bleach worked, but I had to scrub out the tank and leave bleach water in the tank to soak over night

Smell is gone and has not come back.

Thanks for the input gents!

Be careful about chlorine pucks in the tank; they can make the ballcock parts (plastic brittle and metal corrode) that could lead to leaks/damage.

Thanks for posting the outcome of your problem. FWIW, we've been living in our home for 39 years. Started using bleach tablets about 10 years ago. We have not had any more problems using bleach tablets then not using them. Any small difference in long longevity of tank parts (though I haven't noticed any) is much overshadowed by the less effort weekly in keeping the bowl looking clean and white for us.
