Odor under the sink
We recently bought a new home (June). Starting in September we began smelling a strong odor in the Cabinet under the sink in the downstairs bathroom. The odor is similar to Mold.
We have nevered stored anything but dry linens in this cabinet. Our builder has done the folllowing to address this problem - without successful results: 1). Changed the vent cap under the sink 2). Changed the trap under the sink. 3). brought in someone with a device to measure Moisture in walls and floors. None was detected. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this odor ?? Thank you for your help. |

Odor under the sink
Moisture could have gotten trapped in the walls during the build out. I'd tear out the wall floor cabinet anything...

Odor under the sink
Is this a brand new house?
Is the odor in any area adjoining the bathroom? Strange that the odor appeared after 3 months. I'd call the Health Dept. in your city and ask if they or someone can do an air quality test. I was a property mgr once and occasionally had to track down and eliminate odors. Last edited by Startingover; 05-14-2013 at 07:16 PM. |

If you suspect its from the sewer have a smoke test performed.

Smoke test is when we pump smoke in to the plumbing system any smoke inside the building indicates that sewer gases are entering the house at some point, examples bad toilet seals cracked or broken vent stacks no traps at fixtures, unused or old plumbing that was not capped or eliminated correctly and so on, you cant see sewer gas but you can see the smoke to find the source.

Iam guessing trap seal is being pulled and allowing sewer gas into the home...what happens is when others fixtures are being used ..like commodes after a flush there is a problem with the way the plumbing was installed not enough vent ....smell.... ben sr

Have your wife pour a bottle of ammonia down the toilet upstairs and flush it...
Wait and see if you smell it downstairs it may take some time.. |
