A O Smith Pro Max water heater

I replaced the burner assembly on my water heater. I tried to light it and nothing happens. I checked the control assembly pushed the pilot light button down and nothing happened when I pressed the igniter. I further t/s and checked control assembly with no lines connected to check for gas flow. There was flow with pilot lite button down. I reassembled unit and tried to light again and nothing happened. Could it be the valve assembly or the igniter? Please help!!! Been without hot water for a week. It took that long to ger burner assembly after I ordered it. Have 3 women in house and getting tired of boiling water for them to have a hot bath. Wanting to shower real bad.

Thanks

Gerald

What is a burner assembly? Is it the burner? Is it the t-couple & pilot? Is it both? Why did you replace it?

By control assembly do you mean the gas valve? If you did, does gas come out of the pilot when you press the pilot button down? Does the piezo ignitor make a spark? Are you sure you installed the "burner assembly" correctly? Did you forget to turn the gas back on?

There are not many controls on a HWT and the majority of them will either prevent the pilot from holding a flame or the gas valve from opening. Without knowing what/why you did what you did it's hard to guess but I bet it's something silly. If you've been without hot water for a week it may be time to call in a pro... Most likely have it fixed in 10-20 minutes.

Yep, after a week... call a pro. I bet it is something silly too.

It may be necessary to hold the pilot button down for several minutes before clicking the igniter to purge air out of the line from the installation process. Then go away and wait 15 minutes to let any gas in the combustion chamber dissipate and come back to try the igniter.

Does the pilot light come on when you hold the pilot button down while clicking the igniter?

Do you see the spark right at the pilot light nozzle when you click the igniter?

It's possible it could be the igniter. However, they usually don't go bad. Igniter wire goes bad a lot. Check igniter wire really good. They have a shield on them. Pull back shield and check connection, make sure it's good. Check for pinched, frayed, bare, or broken igniter wire.
