A.O. Smith Gas Water Heater Lukewarm water

I have an 8 year old Promax FCV 50 100. It has serviced 5 people well, but lately is sending lukewarm water after a single shower.

I replaced the thermocouple 2 years ago when the pilot wouldn't stay lit. Now the pilot is staying lit, and I can hear the burner working. But I turn on a faucet and seem to get lukewarm water.

I was thinking maybe the dip tube. Anyway ideas on checking this possibility?

Could be a bad mixing valve (single handle faucet cartridge). Bleeding cold water into the hot side.

I checked all rooms in the house and had the same lukewarm situation so I ruled out a faucet issue

Just one of them could be the culprit

Turn on one single handle faucet for warm water, about 1/3 to 1/2 way.

Then turn on another to see if you get solid hot water.

If you get hot water at the other faucets when one particular faucet left on part way, then the latter is likely the one cross feeding cold water into the hot line.

You would have to disconnect the cold water line from the water heater to check for or replace the dip tube. Before actually unscrewing the fitting from the tank, you might poke a thin straight stick down with a tiny nail at the end protruding about 1/4 inch to the side. If this catches well above the bottom of the tank as you pump the stick up and down, you likely have a dip tube problem.
