Noisy Garbage Disposal - fix or replace ?

Looking for other peoples' best guesses - I dropped a 16d nail down the kitchen sink, then later turned on the disposal (Sinkmaster). That made a big racket. I got the nail out ok, but now the disposal makes a heck of a lot of noise when I run it. It works though it's 5x noisier and it shakes the whole counter when it runs. I'm guessing I bent the axle/spindle, and that the disposal is a lost cause. Any other ideas ?

You 'might' still have a piece of metal stuck down in there. Maybe it chipped one of the blades....

Nothing is lost by pulling it out and having a good luck with it on the bench....if it's a lost cause...go buy a new one...

But I have to ask....how did a 16d nail get that close to it?

I thought I was bad about reusing nails...but washing them first? I'm not that OCD.

Had it in my hand when I decided to wash my hands, set it down next to sink, brushed it with the towel. Ta-da !

Think baked potato. (5" 40d's will work even better)

When dealing with garbage disposers with problems, you just replace them.

They will last for only 6 years or so

Don't try to repair it, just tear it out and install an ISE Badger 5.

I have installed over 300 and its the best thing you can do.

I agree on replacing them. Do not agree on using any of the badger series, They all are noisy right out of the box. Buy a better Insinkerator (who also make Badger) or a top line well noise insulated unit.

Badgers are builder grade units.

I guess my Sears disposal is beating the odds...13 years and still going strong.

Just don't use one and throw your food in the garbage where it belongs.
