noise when toliet tank refills


when the tank starts to fill after flushing the pipes make a banging noise until the tank fills...what's the problem

2 threads on same issue merged

normally its the angle stop or the fill valve. close the valve about halfway and flush it, if the problem goes away change the valve. if it doesn't, change the fill valve

Actually I think I had that backwards... if you reduce the flow and it fixes the problem it's the fill valve. If the valve is halfway shut and it still makes the noise then its normally the washer in the valve. I have seen a PRV on the main line fail and make the same noise, so it could be other things, but the fill valve and angle stop are the easiest (and cheapest) places to start.

Just start?? or has this been a on going ? You say pipe's start banging ? are theae the copper in the wall ? A little more info. If it is the copper that is banging. Than a water hammer at the end of the copper pipes would be a fix.What that is is a i belive a 8" piece of copper with a cap on the end and than you sweat the other end to the copper line. Now you ask how am i going to get at the line? I belive you can go to the water heater and put it their. What this does is let the water bounce in the tube instead of in the line . This hange's off of the pipe . We will say like a T in the water line
