No water from tub hot water

I have an older house. When I turn the hot water knob on the tub on, nothing happens, no water, nothing. If i turn it back off (kind of crank it off) and then back on, hot water will begin to flow. Do I have some sort of air leak that is effecting the pressure? Any help would be awsome.

Thanks

I am guessing that the washer on the stem of the handle is damaged. You will need to turn off the water supply and take the handle apart to examine the washer. Not a hard job.
