No cold water out of mixing valve?

I recently bought a NEw home (new to me) and there were a few plumbing issues. some cut pipes and broken valves. HAd to rerout a few lines in the basement and cap a few ends. Nothing big, but I'm stumped here...

I was handy enough to sweat the pipes that needed replacment, but the shower is "stump'in" me?

At first the cold water wouldn't shut off, so I replaced the mixing valve and shower head. Now the cold water won't come out?? I have hot water, but nothing when cold is on?

Ideas?

Oh, it is a Moen Adler shower set-up. I also installed a shutoff valve before the cold intake so I know there is water coming into the valve, just not out?

thanks so much.

Turn off the water, pull out the cartridge and shake it to see if the balancing spool is functioning properly. It should rattle.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not sure what the cartridge is? Can you point me in the right direction to see a diagram of a typical mixing valve?

thanks again.

No cold water out of mixing valve?

HEre is teh exploded parts view of the shower set-up that I have.

Does the cartridge just slide out or are there pins holding it in place?

Thanks for the information. If anybody else has anything to add or any other ideas I would appreciate it.

There is a horse shoe shaped clip that lifts out---The cartridge pulls straight out--usually you will need the help of a Moen cartridge puller(they are sold where ever Moen parts are sold)

You think that a home depot or Lowes would have this "Cartridge Puller"

Thanks

I use channel locks to grab ahold of the brass stem and wiggle while I pull. It's hard but you can usually get it, especially if it's not really old.

Depot has it Loews too I would guess. It's also a good practice to clean up the hole with a bit of sand paper rolled up like a pencil. Some times the hole has a bit of crud build up that can damage the new cartridge.....Mike...

Edit--Use the puller---Alan is a pro and knows what he can get away with before the shaft snaps--You do not.--Mike--

No cold water out of mixing valve?

Any chance the problem is in the cold water shutoff?

Nahh. I wasn't getting any cold water to the shower head so I installed a shutoff valve on the cold line before the mixing valve as a check. There is water there and at decent flow rate as well.

I'm stumped.

Apex---When you pull that cartridge out--Instead of turning the water off to the whole house---

Shut the hot water off at your water heater and the cold using your new shut off----

That will give you a chance to test the cold water flow--and maybe blast loose any debris that may be clogging up your cold water line---Mike---
