Niosy tap

Hello. Can anyone tell me how to stop my cold mixer tap from singing to us? It is particularly bad when the up stairs toilet cistern is filling. The hot tap is fine.

Faucets that "sing" usually have a bad washer or "O" ring. When water is running, it is like a reed instrument. The washer vibrates and causes the sound.

"sining tap"

Thank you Majakdragon! This tap does not sing when it is running. It is when other taps are. What do you make of that?:whistling2:

It is either pure vibration or a condition known as water hammer,,,or combo of both. Maybe your pipes are loose and vibrating in the wall,,doesnt take much to set them off. I heard one solution is to slip an expansion tank in there,or even a risor chunck of copper with a cap on the end,it provides SOME cushion as air is trapped in there,,,a sniffer valve on the cap,,, helps put it in there.BUT you have to have access. Can you feel on the walls WHERE it is vibrating the most?? OR enjoy the tunes???(nobody 'sings' to me,being I live alone!!)

Hmmm, I thought it was when that faucet was running. Try blocking the spout opening when the noise is going on (with your hand) or turning off the supply valves under the sink. It may be a suction causing the noise instead of pressure. This would still be a bad washer allowing air to enter the lines.

The washer vibrates

Yes, and the pressure waves from this water powered oscillator are probably shortening the life of the pipe joints.

Smaller washers should have higher pitch.
