New water heater: is this trash or should I keep it
I'm assuming this rubber thingie was just keeping dirt out of my new water heater during manufacture and shipping and I should throw it away... but before I do I wanted to make sure it's not some kind of energy-saving device designed to keep hot water out of the cold line...?

that is exactly what it is, It is also one more thing that can screw up. I took mine out and threw it away when I changed my dip tube.
