New washer keeps turning water on/off

When I start the washer and it starts to fill with water, I hear constant banging and the hose shakes, it's like if it keeps turning the solonoid valve on off on the cold side (I think, I'd have to double check). Is it doing this to regulate the water temp, or could it be defective? This can't be good on my plumbing. Also do water hammer arrestors really work? I may get one installed if this is in fact normal, as that is some serious wear and tear on the old copper pipes and if it decided to break that could really suck.

Plumbing scares the crap out of me but I might venture in that world and do it myself. Also pex tubing looks easy to work with, think a 2 year old could do it. :p It's all copper now but I could change that up as they made a real mess out of it anyway.

Some Whirlpool models attempt to regulate water temperature when you select warm. They do it by turning the water on and off as you've described. The water never gets very warm though, and it seems to be kind of a gimmicky useless function.

Ahhh, I actually forgot to mention, but it is a Whirlpool . Well it's an "Estate" which is from Whirlpool. I guess it is normal then, I'll probably just want to install those water hammers anyway, or do you think I should be fine? The pipes don't really physically shake, it's just loud. The hoses probably take most of the impact and they are metal ones.

"Plumbing scares the crap out of me". Red Squirrel, remember this: making a mistake with plumbing will only get you wet, making a mistake with electricity may put out the entire block. Don't be scared of plumbing, you can learn by doing. "Also pex tubing looks easy to work with". PEX tubing is easier to work with than copper, IF you have to tools to work with PEX tubing. I run copper where needed, and PEX if I decide it's needed, but I have the tools for PEX, and copper. "Also do water hammer arrestors really work?" Yes, if sized and installed properly. After reading Dave's comment, I would look into how this "Estate" brand machine regulates water temp. Chances of the Estate being made by Whirlpool are very high. IF this machine indeed uses an ON/OFF function to regulate water temp this may well be your problem. Good Luck, David
