Default New Tub Shower Mixer

I just took out an old clawfoot tub that leaked and I'm putting in a new convention tub. However, There is a vertical stud directly in line with the location of the drain and new shower mixer. Should I cut the stud or just try and notch it? Its a true 2x4 so it really is 4". Would notching off 2" be a big deal? The spec sheet says that it needs to be at least 1 5/8" from the finished wall. What tool would be the best to use if notching off 2" from the stud spanning 5 feet is the answer?
